Even though port of Kemi is not yet included in the European Union Fit for 55’s FuelEU Maritime requirements, Port Of Kemi Ltd.is acting responsibly with care of the environment and on its part help the customers to reach their environmental objectives.
The shore power system enables the cargo vessels to use electricity instead of diesel to manage the vessel’s everyday functions while at the port. Using the shore power will significantly reduce the vessel’s emissions at the port.
Port of Kemi is already having one shore power system, the new system enables different types of vessels to plug in. The system now building is constructed on quay 7 and it will be in use in the beginning of 2027. The new system offers shore power with three types of voltage and two types of frequency which allows for example the Asian-vessel already visiting the port to connect to the system.
The project is implemented on a turnkey basis and Nordec Electro Power from Vaasa was selected as the system supplier. -The project is challenging but it also gives us a great opportunity to show our capabilities expertise as an electrical all-rounder, states Jussi Kempus, the co-founder of Nordic Electro Power. -The collaboration with Nordic Electro Power as well as all other experts participating in this project has been seamless and the project is proceeding as scheduled, says Ritva Torikka, the project manager and the development manager of Port Of Kemi. -We prepared for the construction of the shore power already when constructing the quay 7, for example the pipes for the electrical cables were installed into the structures of the quay. This way we now didn’t have to open the structures and could keep the quay in normal use.
