Port of Kemi expansion project is on the home stretch

Started in the spring 2021, the biggest expansion in the history of port of Kemi has reached its home stretch.

The expansion work has continued after a short winter break. – The quay and the infrastructure will be finished up by the end of June and the dredging work continues through the summer. The new, 12-meter fairway will be in its safe clearance depth in September, tells Jari Heikkilä, Port of Kemi Ltd.’s technical manager and expansion project’s project manager.

Also, this week Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency has continued the dredging work of the Government administrated Ajos sea fairway. Most of the dredging work is now finished: during this open water season the fairway will be finished up and safety devices as well as guide signs are installed. In the Government administrated sea fairway, Boskalis Terramare Ltd. operates as the contractor of the deepening project.

Both the expansion and the deepening projects bring many different types of machinery into sea fairway and port water areas. Yachts and other small boats are asked to pay attention to the abnormal traffic in the water areas. Work machinery is instructed to yield the cargo ships, but for all vessels travelling in the area, a 150-meter clearance to the machinery is asked to maintain.
